Rakht Charitra 2 (2010) - Movie Review

Cast: Vivek Oberoi, Suriya, Priyamani, Sudeep, Radhika Apte
Director: Ram Gopal Varma

'Rakht Charitra 2' begins and rightly with a recap of the Part 1. Thus, the movie recalls the past rivalry between politician Narsimha, his loyal worker Veerbhadra, and Naagmani who instigated Narsimha against Veerbhadra. So, Veerbhadra's son Pratap played by Vivek Oberoi takes revenge and kills Naagmani and Narsimha though with the help of a powerful politician (Shatryghan Sinha playing Shivaji) who helps Veerbhadra become a minister. The Part 2 is full of revenge and counter revenge. Though Pratap wants to settle down in peace, Surya Narayan Reddy doesn't let him, and plants a car bomb to finish him. Anyway, Pratap escapes the bid, but returns to old path; he decides to finish his rival in Surya. In this regard, he is ready to go against the advice of his mentor Shivaji. One wonders if the part 2 is more violent than the part 1, but anyway, the former isn't much different. The police arrest Surya for attempting to kill Pratap and the latter's gang tries to kill Surya in the court as well as the jail though in vain. Then Surya also succeeds in getting a political party's nomination for his wife Bhawani in the forthcoming poll. As a result, Pratap turns panicky.

Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma succeeds in portraying the present scenario of Indian politics. His characters fit in very well with what happens in India. We do have Prataps and Suryas as also Sudeep and Shatrughan Sinha, present in our society. Thanks to Ramu's solid script that provides his characters play as well as they can. That's why the families of Surya and Pratap bring them well, educate and married as they wish. This is another matter that their fight with each other is the bloodiest. Overall, the story is solid and both protagonists - Viveik and Surya- play their roles brilliantly. Priyamani isn't far behind. He is excellent too. Music is too, loud for ears. The gory scenes like the killings with an axe are too grim to watch. Wish Ramu had avoided some of them in Part 2.
